What Iowa Requires of Radon Mitigation Specialists
Anyone who mitigates radon in Iowa for a fee has to be credentialed by the state, and the rule reaches companies based outside Iowa that offer mitigation to Iowa residents. That requirement, and everything below it, sits in Iowa Administrative Code 641 chapter 44, read in full on August 16, 2026. The current version of the chapter took effect July 1, 2026. Iowa HHS publishes the list of credentialed radon mitigation specialists and runs the program through its credentialing pages.
This matters more here than it looks, because search results for radon work in Iowa are full of companies headquartered in other states. The credential belongs to an individual rather than to a company, and it is checkable against the state list, so ask for the name of the credentialed individual who will be responsible for your system, not just the company name. Credentialed, or it is a serious misdemeanor
Rule 641-44.3(1) says no person may mitigate for radon in Iowa for a fee or other remuneration unless credentialed by the department, and states plainly that this applies to businesses located in Iowa and in other states that offer radon mitigation services to Iowa residents. Rule 641-44.11 makes it unlawful to function as a radon mitigation specialist in violation of Iowa Code chapter 136B, and a person convicted of violating that chapter or these rules is guilty of a serious misdemeanor.
What the credential takes to get
Rule 641-44.3(2) requires the individual to be at least 18, to hold three years of relevant professional work experience (relevant postsecondary education substitutes year for year for up to two of those three), to have completed department-approved training on both radon measurement and radon mitigation within the two years before applying, and to have passed the national mitigation examination from the NRPP or the NRSB within those same two years.
Continuing education keeps it current
Under rule 641-44.9, a credentialed individual completes at least eight hours of department-approved continuing education every two years. Someone holding both the Iowa measurement certification and the mitigation credential completes 12 hours. A credential is annual, so the person you hire has renewed it recently or it has lapsed.
The build standard is named in the rule
Rule 641-44.3(3) requires compliance with the ANSI/AARST mitigation standards as amended to August 1, 2025, and names them: SGM-SF-2023 for existing homes, and SGM-MFLB-2023 for existing multifamily, school, commercial and mixed-use buildings. A quote that cannot say which standard the system is built to is a quote worth a second question.
The installer does not grade their own work
Rule 641-44.3(4) requires a test before and a test after the job, and paragraph d sets who may run them: an independent measurement specialist who is not employed by the same firm as the mitigation specialist, or the homeowner, occupant or other person responsible for the building. The post-mitigation test starts no sooner than one day after the work is finished and within 30 days of installation. A building owner can waive the testing requirement in writing on a department form, and the installer has to keep that waiver.
The system has to hit a number
Rule 641-44.3(4) paragraph e requires the installer to "install a mitigation system that reduces the radon level to below 4 pCi/L in the area or the level of the building where the mitigation system is installed", quoted from the rule. That is a performance requirement in the code, not a marketing promise, which is why the follow-up test above exists to check it.
